Modeling Onset of Hourly Nesting Activity in a Freshwater Turtle Using Abiotic Variables and Physiological Capacity

چکیده
Nesting is an essential, yet variable, reproductive behavior in most oviparous organisms. Although many factors conceivably influence nesting behaviors, it unclear which strongly terrestrial nest timing aquatic nonavian reptiles. As climate changing rapidly, understanding the relative influences of biotic and abiotic on behaviors may yield important information future changes daily seasonal activity. We collected hourly data to examine significance local weather conditions within-season activity a large population Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta). quantified as ratio females who nested all could each hour, adjusting size denominator include time required shell subsequent egg clutch. then used zero-inflated models identify potential predictors presence/absence strength responses (i.e., fraction turtles that nest). Higher temperatures rainfall predicted stronger responses, whereas lower no absence activity, indicating both temperature are cues phenology. Our study enhances our

Human Recreation and the Nesting Ecology of a Freshwater Turtle (Chrysemys picta)
– Over a 3-year period, we studied the relationship between the intensity of human recreation and the nesting ecology of the painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) at a major nesting beach. Our results suggest that the intensity of human recreation at this site had no effect on the decision of turtles to emerge from the water and nest, or on habitat selection by nesting turtles. This apparent lack of...

Nesting ecology in the freshwater turtle Podocnemis unifilis: spatiotemporal patterns and inferred explanations
1. Habitat selection has profound ecological and evolutionary consequences. For example, there may be strong selection for nest-site choice such that oviparous females, lacking parental care, may adaptively manipulate their offspring survival or phenotype. Alternatively, nesting decisions may be a passive by-product of other processes leading to similar nonrandom nesting patterns. 2. Here we ex...
